ITTC 2024: CMG Explores Ultra-Low Latency UHD Transmission (NVI)

The 2024 Beijing International Television Technology Symposium (ITTC2024) was held in Beijing on June 13-14. At the Ultra-HD All-Media Communication Symposium on the 14th, Wang Zhenzhong, Deputy Director of the Technology Planning and Research Department of the Technology Bureau of China Media Group, delivered a speech on the theme of "Exploration of Ultra-Low Latency Transmission Technology for Ultra-HD".

In his speech, Wang Zhenzhong mentioned that the National Key Laboratory of China Media Group, in conjunction with Sobey, has jointly developed a brand-new cross-domain, cross-platform ultra-low latency transmission protocol, NVI (hereinafter referred to as the NVI protocol), which excels in cross-domain, cross-platform, and ultra-low latency aspects. It not only meets the real-time requirements of high-definition video transmission but also opens up new possibilities for independent innovation and development of domestic video transmission technology.

NVI, a cross-domain and cross-platform ultra-low latency transmission protocol

In his speech, Wang Zhenzhong introduced that NVI has three core advantages:

  • Cross-domain capability: This protocol supports transmission in both LAN and internet environments, enabling seamless connectivity across different network environments. This is crucial for applications with high real-time requirements, such as live streaming and remote production.
  • Cross-platform compatibility: The NVI protocol is compatible with multiple operating systems, including Windows, Linux, macOS, and the domestic Kylin operating system. This broad applicability not only ensures the flexibility of user choice but also lays a solid foundation for the establishment of the future protocol ecosystem.
  • Ultra-low latency: Under the same network environment, the transmission latency of the NVI protocol is better than that of existing similar products, such as NDI. This is crucial for the real-time requirements of high-definition video transmission and is expected to greatly improve the efficiency and experience of application scenarios such as live broadcasting and remote production.

Based on the NVI protocol, the National Key Laboratory of China Media Group is promoting the demonstration of two application scenarios:

One is a lightweight mobile broadcasting system. Utilizing the NVI protocol to achieve rapid deployment and efficient transmission of mobile broadcasting equipment meets the high real-time requirements of application scenarios such as live broadcasting, which will greatly improve the flexibility and efficiency of live broadcasting and rebroadcasting.

The second is a cloud-based studio. By combining cloud technology with the NVI ultra-low latency transmission protocol, a virtual studio in the cloud is constructed, enabling remote production, remote control, and resource sharing. This not only improves the flexibility and scalability of the studio but also helps reduce the construction and operation costs.

Breaking the international transmission standard monopoly and promoting independent innovation in domestic video technology

During the development of the NVI protocol, China Media Group and Sobey collaborated deeply. Based on their rich technical accumulation and market experience in core video processing areas such as encoding/decoding, conversion, and switching, both parties jointly promoted the implementation of the NVI protocol in hardware adaptation, software support, and application scenarios, paving the way for the industrial application of this independent innovation.

It is worth mentioning that China Media Group's National Key Laboratory will also gradually establish a hardware ecosystem based on the NVI protocol. This includes completing the adaptation and native device support of the NVI protocol for core hardware devices such as cameras, codecs, recorders, multi-view monitors, and switchers from numerous manufacturers. This initiative aims to break the monopoly risk of international transmission standards centered on protocols such as NDI and promote independent innovation and development of domestic video transmission technology.

Currently, most professional video equipment in China relies on foreign transmission protocols, which not only increases users' procurement costs but also limits the application of domestically produced equipment in the broadcasting and television industry.

We hope to promote the deep participation of our partners through our independently developed NVI protocol, and form a complete domestic video transmission solution and industrial ecosystem through open source, co-construction and sharing, injecting new vitality into the industry.
